NLC Fumed Over The Adjustment Of Fuel Price

 Written by Ignatius Igwe

Since the presidential pronouncement, fuel queues have resurfaced across the country as Nigerians forage for the premium product which was rose from around N185  per litre to between N400 and N600 per litre.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday fumed over the adjustment of pump prices by the Nigerian National Petrol Company Limited.

Barely 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu announced an end to the subsidy era during his inaugural speech at Eagle Square, Abuja on Monday, the NNPCL confirmed the hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit also known as petrol.

Since the presidential pronouncement, fuel queues have resurfaced across the country as Nigerians forage for the premium product which was rose from around N185  per litre to between N400 and N600 per litre.

Worried by the situation, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, issued a statement expressing worry that the national oil company would announce an increment.

Describing the development as unfortunate, Ajaero said the NNPCL’s action was coming on the heels of an ongoing meeting with stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to manage the unilateral but unfortunate announcement by the President.

“It is therefore unacceptable and we seriously condemn it. Good faith negotiation is key to reaching agreement. What the government has done is like holding a gun to the head of Nigerian people and bringing undue pressure on the leaders thus undermine the dialogue,” the NLC President said.

“We call on the federal government to immediately instruct the NNPC to withdraw this vexatious Pricing template to allow free flow of discussions by the parties. Nigerians would not accept any manipulations of any kind from any of the parties especially from the representatives of the Government.

“Our commitment to this process is buoyed on the fact that all the parties would be committed to ensuring that it is carried out within the ambits of liberty without undue pressure. The release of that Template may not allow us to continue if nothing is done to withdraw it so that the dialogue can continue unhindered. It is clear that Government is actually trying to scuttle the process.”

Femi Adeshina Got A New Post

Former Special Adviser to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina is set to assume the role of Executive Vice Chairman at The Sun Newspapers starting from September 1.

Adesina, who previously held positions as the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, disclosed this during a recent interview with The Crest.

Senator Orji Kalu, the company’s founder, approved the appointment

According to Adesina, when he expressed his intention to leave The Sun newspapers, Kalu advised him not to resign, offering him the opportunity to return if he didn’t enjoy his government role or even after serving for eight years.

“I came from TheSun newspaper. I was the MD/Editor-in-Chief (of the publishing company). And when I wanted to leave, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu said ‘Don’t resign. You may get to the government and you don’t like it. You can always come back. Or, you may get to the government and stay eight years; you can always come back. I’m going to make you the Executive Vice Chairman of the company.’ Not only did he say it, he issued me the letter. Yes, I have the letter,” Adesina said in the interview.

During his eight-year tenure as the ex-President’s spokesperson, he was unable to go on leave.

The report said Adesina intends to retreat to a peaceful location to write his memoirs.

Adesina served as the president of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) before he was appointed Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) by ex-President Buhari on May 31, 2015.

Adegoke’s Death: Hilton Hotel Owner, Ramon Adedoyin To Die By Hanging

Osun State High Court has found the popular hotel owner, Dr Ramon Adedoyin guilty in the murder case of Timothy Adegoke, a former master’s degree student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, whose death occurred between November 5 and 7, 2021, at Hilton Honours Hotel, Ile-Ife.

The Osun Chief Judge, Adepele Ojo, while delivering her judgement on the case, held that the circumstantial evidence available to the court, pointed to the killing of Adegoke while being a guest at the hotel owned by Adedoyin.

According to her, Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box did not help him, as the circumstantial evidence had shifted the burden of proof on him.

Justice Ojo also said Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box meant he agreed to the murder charge pressed against him by the prosecution, dismissing the alibi pleaded on his behalf by his counsel, who said the hotel owner was in Abuja for many days around the time the death of the late Adegoke occurred.

Any Filling Station Caught Hoarding Fuel Shall Be Sealed Off.... Gov. Adeleke Ademola

Osun State government has issued a stern warning to petroleum marketers, declaring that any filling station in the state caught hoarding fuel shall be sealed off.

The Governor Ademola Adeleke-led administration also said operators of any of such filling stations found guilty of hoarding fuel shall be prosecuted for crime of economic sabotage.

The state government issued the warning against the backdrop of deliberate hoard of the product by some unscrupulous marketers.

As contained in a release by the spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, the state government was not unaware of plots by some marketers to cause artificial fuel scarcity in the state.

The government said the affected fuel dealers are causing unnecessary hardship for the people in the state.

It is also described the action as not only inhumane, but also unpatriotic, vowing that such would not be allowed in the state.

“The attention of the Osun State government has been drawn to the deliberate hoarding of PMS by the fuel dealers within the state.

“[Their action was] as a result of the statement from the inaugural speech of the new President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the removal of fuel subsidy.

“[The affected fuel dealers are, by their actions] thereby causing unnecessary hardship for the people in the state.

“This deliberate action is not only inhumane, but unpatriotic and will not be allowed by the government,” it was stated in the release.

The government made it known that the Special Monitoring Team On Fuel Scarcity it earlier set up was still effective and would swing into action against the marketers suspected to be hoarding fuel.

It vowed not to condone and form of economic sabotage in the state, adding that the monitoring team, led by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Kazeem Akinleye, would, from today, commence special monitoring of all the filling stations in the state

“As from today, 30 May, 2023, the Committee shall begin special monitoring of all the filling stations across the state in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders.

“Any fuel station found guilty of hoarding fuel to create artificial scarcity shall be sealed off and operators prosecuted for crime of economic sabotage,” it was stated in the release.

Nigerians May Buy Fuel At N750 Per Litre Over Removal Of Subsidy

Nigerians may buy fuel N750 per litre following the announcement of subsidy removal.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy during his inaugural address on Monday.

According to Tinubu, the era of fuel subsidy ended with the administration of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, stressing that the 2023 budget has no provision for subsidy.

“The fuel subsidy is gone,” Tinubu declared on Monday after he was sworn in as Nigeria’s 16th President

The former Lagos governor said his government will rather channel funds into the development of infrastructure and other areas to strengthen the economy while stressing on the possibilities of a “unified exchange rate” under his administration.

Prior to Tinubu’s announcement, stakeholders in the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil and gas industry warned Nigerians to be ready to pay as much as N750 per litre of petrol.

The warning formed the highpoint of the stakeholders’ interventions during an online workshop, with the theme, “Deregulation of the Nigerian Downstream Sector: The Day After.”

The workshop was organised by industry stakeholders, in collaboration with the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA).

The downstream players, in conjunction with economic policy analysts and relevant government agencies, also outlined strategies and measures that should be deployed to ensure sustainable removal of petrol subsidy.

Speaking at the session, National President of IPMAN, Mr. Chinedu Okoronkwo, who was represented by IPMAN’s National Operations Controller, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, revealed that the marketers were in full support of the government’s plan to embark on full deregulation of the downstream sector.

Okoronkwo warned Nigerians to prepare to pay up to N750 for every litre of petrol after the full implementation of the subsidy removal.

He however, pointed out that the projected pump price was likely to drop to around N500 if the government encouraged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to provide foreign exchange for marketers at the official rate.

Okoronkwo also urged the government to channel expected savings from subsidy removal to provision of palliatives for the masses. He advised the government to be alert and sensitive to resentment from Nigerians.

Participants at the workshop included representatives of the ARDA, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), and Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN).

Others were NNPC Retail Limited (NRL), Petroleum Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and CITAC Africa, among others.

In his goodwill message, Chief Executive Officer, NMDPRA, Mr. Farouk Ahmed, told industry players that the authority would allow a free market-pricing regime to prevail in the petroleum marketing business in the country once the sector was fully deregulated.

National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Lawal Yusuf Othman, stated that the full deregulation of the downstream sector and complete removal of petrol subsidy would introduce a mix of opportunities and challenges into the operating environment.

FIRST INAUGURAL ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU 29 MAY 2023

My Fellow Citizens,

I stand before you honoured to assume the sacred mandate you have given me. My love for this nation is abiding. My confidence in its people, unwavering. And my faith in God Almighty, absolute. I know that His hand shall provide the needed moral strength and clarity of purpose in those instances when we seem to have reached the limits of our human capacity.

This day is bold and majestic yet bright and full of spirit, as is our precious nation.

As a nation, we have long ago decided to march beyond the dimness of night into the open day of renewed national hope.

The question we now ask ourselves is whether to remain faithful to the work inherent in building a better society or retreat into the shadows of our unmet potential.

For me, there is but one answer. We are too great a nation and too grounded as a people to rob ourselves of our finest destiny.

This nation’s journey has been shaped by the prayers of millions, and the collective sacrifices of us all.

We have endured hardships that would have made other societies crumble.

Yet, we have shouldered the heavy burden to arrive at this SUBLIME moment where the prospect of a better future merges with our improved capacity to create that future.

To the surprise of many but not to ourselves, we have more firmly established this land as a democracy in both word and deed.

The peaceful transition from one government to another is now our political tradition. This handover symbolizes our trust in God, our enduring faith in representative governance and our belief in our ability to reshape this nation into the society it was always meant to be.

Here, permit me to say a few words to my predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr President, you have been an honest, patriotic leader who has done his best for the nation you love. On a more personal note, you are a worthy partner and friend. May History be kind to you.

For many years, Nigeria’s critics have trafficked the rumour that our nation will break apart, even perish.

Yet here we are. We have stumbled at times, but our resilience and diversity have kept us going.

Our burdens may make us bend at times, but they shall never break us.

Instead, we stand forth as Africa’s most populous nation and as the best hope and strongest champion of the Black Race.

As citizens, we declare as one unified people devoted to one unified national cause, that as long as this world exists, NIGERIA SHALL EXIST.

Today, Fate and Destiny join together to place the torch of human progress in our very hands. We dare not let it slip.

We lift high this torch so that it might shine on every household and in every heart that calls itself Nigerian. We hold this beam aloft because it lights our path with compassion, brotherhood, and peace. May this great light never EXTINGUISH.

Our administration shall govern on your behalf but never rule over you. We shall consult and dialogue but never dictate. We shall reach out to all but never put down a single person for holding views contrary to our own.

We are here to further mend and heal this nation, not tear and injure it.

In this vein, may I offer a few comments regarding the election that brought us to this juncture. It was a hard fought contest. And it was also fairly won. Since the advent of the Fourth Republic, Nigeria has not held an election of better quality.

The outcome reflected the will of the people. However, my victory does not render me any more Nigerian than my opponents. Nor does it render them any less patriotic.

They shall forever be my fellow compatriots. And I will treat them as such. They represent important constituencies and concerns that wisdom dare not ignore.

They have taken their concerns to court. Seeking legal redress is their right and I fully defend their exercise of this right. This is the essence of the rule of law.

Over six decades ago, our founding fathers gave bravely of themselves to place Nigeria on the map as an independent nation.

We must never allow the labor of those who came before us to wither in vain but to blossom and bring forth a better reality.

Let us take the next great step in the journey they began and believed in.

Today, let us recommit our very selves to placing Nigeria in our hearts as the indispensable home for each and every one of us regardless of creed, ethnicity, or place of birth.

My supporters, I thank you. To those who voted otherwise, I extend my hand across the political divide. I ask you to grasp it in national affinity and brotherhood. For me, political coloration has faded away. All I see are Nigerians.

May we uphold these fitting and excellent notions as the new Nigerian ideal.

My fellow compatriots,

The Nigerian ideal which I speak of is more than just an improvement in economic and other statistics. These things are important; but they can never convey the fullness of our story.

Our mission is to improve our way of life in a manner that nurtures our humanity, encourages compassion toward one another, and duly rewards our collective effort to resolve the social ills that seek to divide us.

Our constitution and laws give us a nation on paper. We must work harder at bringing these noble documents to life by strengthening the bonds of economic collaboration, social cohesion, and cultural understanding. Let us develop a shared sense of fairness and equity.

The South must not only seek good for itself but must understand that its interests are served when good comes to the North. The North must see the South likewise.

Whether from the winding creeks of the Niger Delta, the vastness of the northern savannah, the boardrooms of Lagos, the bustling capital of Abuja, or the busy markets of Onitsha, you are all my people. As your president, I shall serve with prejudice toward none but compassion and amity towards all.

In the coming days and weeks, my team will publicly detail key aspects of our programme. Today, permit me to outline in broad terms a few initiatives that define our concept of progressive good governance in furtherance of the Nigerian ideal:

The principles that will guide our administration are simple:

1. Nigeria will be impartially governed according to the constitution and the rule of law.

2. We shall defend the nation from terror and all forms of criminality that threaten the peace and stability of our country and our subregion.

3. We shall remodel our economy to bring about growth and development through job creation, food security and an end of extreme poverty.

4. In our administration, Women and youth will feature prominently.

5. Our government will continue to take proactive steps such as championing a credit culture to discourage corruption while strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of the various anti-corruption agencies.

SECURITY

Security shall be the top priority of our administration because neither prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity and violence.

To effectively tackle this menace, we shall reform both our security DOCTRINE and its ARCHITECTURE.

We shall invest more in our security personnel, and this means more than an increase in number. We shall provide, better training, equipment, pay and firepower.

THE ECONOMY

On the economy, we target a higher GDP growth and to significantly reduce unemployment.

We intend to accomplish this by taking the following steps:

First, budgetary reform stimulating the economy without engendering inflation will be instituted.

Second, industrial policy will utilize the full range of fiscal measures to promote domestic manufacturing and lessen import dependency.

Third, electricity will become more accessible and affordable to businesses and homes alike. Power generation should nearly double and transmission and distribution networks improved. We will encourage states to develop local sources as well.

I have a message for our investors, local and foreign: our government shall review all their complaints about multiple taxation and various anti-investment inhibitions.

We shall ensure that investors and foreign businesses repatriate their hard earned dividends and profits home.

JOBS

My administration must create meaningful opportunities for our youth. We shall honour our campaign commitment of one million new jobs in the digital economy.

Our government also shall work with the National Assembly to fashion an omnibus Jobs and Prosperity bill. This bill will give our administration the policy space to embark on labour-intensive infrastructural improvements, encourage light industry and provide improved social services for the poor, elderly and vulnerable.

AGRICULTURE

Rural incomes shall be secured by commodity exchange boards guaranteeing minimal prices for certain crops and animal products. A nationwide programme for storage and other facilities to reduce spoilage and waste will be undertaken.

Agricultural hubs will be created throughout the nation to increase production and engage in value-added processing. The livestock sector will be introduced to best modern practices and steps taken to minimize the perennial conflict over land and water resources in this sector.

Through these actions, food shall be made more abundant yet less costly. Farmers shall earn more while the average Nigerian pays less.

INFRASTRUCTURE

We shall continue the efforts of the Buhari administration on infrastructure. Progress toward national networks of roads, rail and ports shall get priority attention.

FUEL SUBSIDY

We commend the decision of the outgoing administration in phasing out the petrol subsidy regime which has increasingly favoured the rich more than the poor. Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources. We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, health care and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions.

MONETARY POLICY

Monetary policy needs thorough housecleaning. The Central Bank must work towards a unified exchange rate. This will direct funds away from arbitrage into meaningful investment in the plant, equipment and jobs that power the real economy.

Interest rates need to be reduced to increase investment and consumer purchasing in ways that sustain the economy at a higher level.

Whatever merits it had in concept, the currency swap was too harshly applied by the CBN given the number of unbanked Nigerians. The policy shall be reviewed. In the meantime, my administration will treat both currencies as legal tender.

FOREIGN POLICY

Given the world in which we reside, please permit a few comments regarding foreign policy.

The crisis in Sudan and the turn from democracy by several nations in our immediate neighbourhood are of pressing concern.

As such, my primary foreign policy objective must be the peace and stability of the West African subregion and the African continent. We shall work with ECOWAS, the AU and willing partners in the international community to end extant conflicts and to resolve new ones.

As we contain threats to peace, we shall also retool our foreign policy to more actively lead the regional and continental quest for collective prosperity.

Conclusion

This is the proudest day of my life. But this day does not belong to me. It belongs to you, the people of Nigeria.

On this day, Nigeria affirms its rightful place among the world’s great democracies. There, Nigeria shall reside forever.

The course of our past and the promise of the future have brought us to this exceptional moment.

In this spirit, I ask you to join me in making Nigeria a more perfect nation and democracy such that the Nigerian ideal becomes and forever remains the Nigerian reality.

With full confidence in our ability, I declare that these things are within our proximate reach because my name is Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and I am the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

May God bless you and May He bless our beloved land.

Elizabeth, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Elin Group Limited and wife of business mogul, Tein Jack-Rich, turned 40 years old on May 18, 2023, and she was hosted to surprise dinner party to mark her new age on Tuesday, May 23.

Court sacks Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba

The Federal High Court in Akwa, Anambra State, has declared Usman Baba’s extended stay in office as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police illegal.

President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Mr Baba on 6 April 2021.

He replaced Mohammed Adamu, whose three months tenure extension was truncated midway.

Born on 1 March 1963 (60 years old), in Geidam, Yobe State, Mr Baba should have statutorily retired from the force on 1 March this year when he clocked 60 years.

But Mr Buhari, in breach of the law, kept Mr Baba in office as Nigeria’s police chief.

Displeased with the President’s violation of the law, a litigant, Okechukwu Nwafor, sued Mr Buhari, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Mr Baba.

Mr Nwafor urged the court to declare Mr Baba’s continued stay in office “illegal and unconstitutional.”

Granting Mr Nwafor’s request, the judge, Fatun Riman, held that Mr Baba’s tenure elongation was unlawful.

Mr Riman ordered Mr Baba to stop parading himself as Nigeria’s Inspector General.

Also, the judge directed Mr Buhari to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to appoint a new IGP, The Will newspaper reported.

Delivering the verdict, Mr Riman said Mr Buhari’s extension of Mr Baba’s tenure violated the provisions of the Police Act 2020.

“It is important to observe that the Inspector-General of police is a public servant and by virtue of the fact that he is a member of the staff of the Nigeria Police Force, an authority established from the Federation by Section 214 (1) of the Constitution and in the subject of the Federal Public Rules 299 (PSR) thereof which provides for the compulsory retirement of all grades of public service officers at the age of 60 or 35 years of service, whichever comes first.

“In the instant case, the 2nd Defendant’s (Mr Baba) birthday comes first. By the said Rule, the 2nd Defendant is obliged to step down on March 1st 2023.

“The PSR retirement age provision is mirrored in section 18 (8) of the Police Act, on the word “Shall” is used in the provision, it is mandatory. See the case of ISHOLA V. AJIBOLA 1994 4 NWLR PT 352 para 506 by Rhodes Vivour JCA (as he then was) and also IBRAHIM & ANOR V. AKINRISOLA (2010) LEPLR 444 CA, Section 7 (6) at the Police Act provides for a four-year term or tenure for the Inspector General of Police and the word “Shall” is also used in the said provision.

“I also observe that despite the prerogative power of the President, he is limited to the provisions of the Constitution. The Inspector General of Police retirement is a statutory and constitutional issue, and no other law of the land can change the ground norm,” the judge declared.

Similar suit challenging Mr Baba’s tenure elongation

In another suit challenging Mr Baba’s continued stay in office, a lawyer, Festus Ogun, called on the court to determine the propriety of the action.

 Written by Benjamin Njoku

The experience of last year also played out again this year, where the show turned into a carnival of sort as hustlers and run-girls took over the space, gallivanting, begging for financial assistance  and clubbing from dusk till dawn.

The guests outside  far overwhelmed those who were in the convention centre venue of the sold-out show. One instance was when some hustlers were spotted accosting Nkem Owoh aka Osuofia, while he was returning to his room after the show.

They were seriously begging him for financial assistance, but while Osuofia was trying to escape to a safe place, they were busy following him closely until he ran into the crowd before they retreated.

Also, the after-party was another aspect of the show that made many wish ‘it lingered endlessly.” But beyond the shortcomings, this year’s AMVCA was another success story of the award show.

During the interview, Ibrahim Chatta who is well known for his versatility revealed that he had been overlooked by the AMVCA in the past, which left him feeling neglected.

However, he acknowledged that there are numerous actors in the industry who are doing well and deserved recognition more than him.

Despite this realization, Chatta couldn’t help but wonder why his junior colleagues were receiving invitations while he was left out.

Nevertheless, Ibrahim Chatta maintained that he doesn’t allow the snub to affect him too deeply. His primary focus remains on pursuing his craft and reaching greater heights.

In his words; “I always thought my work wasn’t good enough, but I see my younger colleagues who score an invite to the event. I don’t want any award to limit me because I am aiming for the Oscars. If I am focusing on not being nominated at AMVCA, I can lose focus.”

As expected the video generated several reactions, while some expressed their support and admiration for his bold ambition, others claimed that Ibrahim Chatta is a better artiste than some that get invitations and even won awards.

I Have Proof Of Refund To Murphy Afolabi Before His Death.....Adunni Ade

Sometimes in July 2021, the late Murphy Afolabi reached out to me, requiring my services for a movie production. He appealed to me stating that it was a self funded production that he couldn't afford my professional fee, but that he would need my moral support.

I asked how many scenes and duration expected of me on set. He said 10 scenes and that I would spend one day. He offered to 'fuel my car' as honorarium, which payment was made on 02 July 2021 for N150,000. Unfortunately, on 11 July 2021 shortly before the commencement of the production, I lost my younger brother.

I contacted Murphy Afolabi a few days afterwards to request for his bank account details, to send him a refund, as I would be travelling to the United States for my younger brother's funeral.

He insisted I held on to the money while he figured out whether to move the shoot forward or contact me for another one. Murphy Afolabi contacted me on 08 October 2021 and said he wanted to start a new job soon and needed me for 4 days, playing the lead but for the same amount of N150,000 which he had paid in July.

I respectfully declined, requested for his bank account details and transferred to his bank account the full refund of N150,000 on the same day 08 October 2021. Proof of both payments are attached in this post..
