NIPOST Workers Shutdown Headquarters Over Unpaid Special Allowances
The headquarters of the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) was
yesterday shut down by over one hundred workers of the organization over
non-payment of their special allowances since 2011.
The workers, who had last week issued a three-day strike ultimatum to
management of NIPOST, which elapsed yesterday, protested under the
banner of National Union of Post and Telecommunications Employees
(NUPTE).
Benefits not paid include transfer allowances, burial expenses and repatriation allowance. President of NUPTE, Sunday Alhassan said the union had written to
stakeholders on the matter including the Minister of Labour and
Productivity, Emeka Wogu to no avail. However, management of NIPOST and the union later went into a meeting
and ironed out their differences with the signing of a communiqué where
both parties agreed to commence payment of the 2006 productivity
incentive allowance from December 2013 to end in June 2014; and also pay
rent enhancement to those on salary grade level 13 and below with
effect from 2014. The communiqué was signed by deputy post master general U. K. Shehu and Mr. Alhassan on behalf of NUPTE.
