Benefits of Veggies

There's a lot of reason that nutrition experts are always are always telling people to eat more veggies. Specific vegetables may offer health advantages to certain people depending on their, overall health and nutrition needs.

All veggies count towards your daily quota. That includes starchy ones (like potatoes), leafy greens, canned tomatoes and frozen spinach. To help nudge you towards upping your intake.

Here's more about why this vegetable is so good for you.

Reduce risk of heart disease

Heart disease is the leading killer of men and women in America and diet plays a big role in helping keep your heart healthy. Vegetables give you potassium and fiber, two nutrients that are good for your heart. Adding lots of veggies to your diet can also help you keep your weight in a healthy range, which takes some pressure off your heart. Leafy greens, avocados and tomatoes make our list of top heart healthy foods, but all veggies have benefits for your heart.

Improve your immune health

It's no secret that what you eat impacts your immune system. Vitamin C is a key nutrient that's found in lots of vegetables (people are always surprised to learn that broccoli and bell peppers have more vitamin C than an orange that helps keep your immune system strong. Eating a well-balanced diet with a variety of foods is also important for your immune system, so include lots of different veggies as well as fruits, whole grains, healthy fats and protein sources.
Fight inflammation

Sometimes inflammation is good, but too much chronic inflammation isn't great for our bodies. Veggies are one of the best foods to eat to help fend off inflammation. They are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals to help your body.

Up your fiber

Most of us don't hit our recommended fiber intake (that's 38g/day for men and 25g/day for women). Eating high-fiber foods like whole grains, fruits, legumes, nuts and yes, vegetables can help you get enough of this key nutrient. Fiber is great for your heart and gut, but also can keep you full and reduce your risk of developing diabetes. All vegetables have fiber, so choose a variety to get your fill. Artichokes, sweet potatoes and peas all make our list of foods with more fiber than an apple.

Benefits for blood sugar

Whether you have diabetes or not, vegetables are low in calories and high in fiber and nutrients, so they can help fill you up and can minimize blood sugar spikes during meals. Adding some arugula to your pasta helps bulk up your plate and keep you satisfied. Try adding peppers to tacos or cauliflower to stir-fries. Some vegetables are higher in starches and carbs—think potatoes, corn, squash, peas—but they can still be included in your diet.

Keep your brain young

If you want to keep your brain sharp, including vegetables in your diet is the way to go. Vegetables, especially leafy greens, are part of the mind set, which was designed by researchers to help reduce your risk of Alzhemier's disease and dementia. The antioxidants and folate they deliver are key nutrients for your brain.

Improve your skin

You can help take care of your skin by staying hydrated and getting quality sleep, but what you eat can help too. Tomatoes deliver lycopene which can actually help protect your skin from sunburn (sunscreen is important too). Kale and avocados can help keep your skin more elastic. Many vegetables, like cucumbers and celery, also have a high water content to help you meet your hydration goals for glowing skin.

Reduce risk of cancer

No diet choice is guaranteed to keep you cancer free, but vegetables are full of cancer-fighting nutrients and antioxidants that may reduce your risk of certain types of cancers. Cruciferous vegetables, like Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, have been studied for their cancer-fighting power. They deliver potassium, folate, vitamin C and phytochemicals, as well as sulforaphane (highest in broccoli) which may protect your cells from carcinogens. Variety is key here, as all veggies have different nutrients and protective effects.

Help your eyes

Eye health may be top of mind if you stare at a computer and phone all day, which can strain your eyes, according to the American Optometric Association. If you want to protect your eyes, eat more vegetables (you'll also want to take some screen breaks and see your eye doctor). Lutein Zeaxanthin are two carotenoids that help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). You'll find them and other eye-protecting carotenoids in basil, corn, red peppers, spinach and broccoli.

Improve blood pressure

Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure, according to the CDC. When it comes to your diet and blood pressure, eating too much salt isn't great. But, eating more potassium rich foods can help reduce the damage of a high-sodium diet. Vegetables, like beets and spinach, deliver potassium (amongst other nutrients) and the fiber from vegetables also helps your heart.

It was gathered that, the Oron-born Senator was seized by three armed hoodlums at his lounge, a popular sit-out along Oron Road, Uyo, the state capital late Sunday night. Eight of the customers, it was learnt, were injured in a resulting stampede as the patrons scampered for safety amid hails of bullets randomly fired by the hoodlums.

HURIWA Asks Nigerians To Beg The President To Resign From Office

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has asked Nigerians to beg President Muhammadu Buhari to resign immediately.

The group is worried by the expanding frontiers of terrorism in the North West and the unprecedented levels of armed kidnappings in Katsina, Niger, Zamfara States and the constant bombardments of parts of Southern Kaduna State by armed Fulani attackers.

HURIWA raised the alarm that Nigeria was snowballing into a huge ungoverned space requiring the joint actions of World leaders and the United Nations to stave off the imminent collapse of constitutional democracy.

The rights advocacy group believes that the reason the attackers were becoming much more daring was because of the toxic body language of those in control of the political layers of power in Abuja.

The group also noted that all this was happening because of the fact that all the strategic security positions in the internal security architectures were headed by persons who share same ethno-religious orientation with the majority of the armed terrorists who were threatening the National Security and were getting away with their antics.

HURIWA said since Buhari does not believe in Federal Character in the appointment of security Chiefs and since his persistent and serial nepotistic appointments in the last 6 years has brought the nation to a near failed state, the next best option was to plead with him in the name of God to resign honourably.

HURIWA said “it will be more honourable for President Buhari to tender his letter of resignation if he still loves to see Nigeria remain unbroken.”

The rights group said this in a statement by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf and made available to DAILY POST on Sunday.

The group regretted that since 2015 “the nation has increasingly become one huge ungoverned space following the abdication of their constitutional functions by the President and the commander-In-Chier of the Armed Forces Buhari”, who, according to the group, “has rather chosen to focus on promoting the primordial agenda of his religion and his Fulani Ethnic nationality to the deyriment, disadvantage and endangerment of the territorial integrity and national security of Nigeria.”

The rights group said the deeper cause of the national security crises facing Nigeria is the absence of an independent National Assembly since 2019 when the lackeys of Buhari were elected as the Senate President and Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives.

In the thinking of HURIWA, President “Buhari’s failure and unwillingness to decisively deal with the armed Fulani attackers because of Ethno-religious consideration is the motivation needed by such terrorist organisation like the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association to continue to threaten States that have decided to pass legislation banning open grazing of cattle.
“The Nigerian President at the moment has decided to fruitlessly chase after the private interest of cattle owners who are his kinsmen whilst neglecting his core function of protecting the territory of Nigeria from invasions by such armed groups.”

HURIWA carpeted the presidency and the National Assembly for failing to take lasting and actionable measures to combat the terror attacks while condemning the President “for failing to officially list these armed Fulani militias in those forests as terrorists and to seek clear, unambiguous international interventions by the United Nations and such nations like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada.”

HURIWA called on the National Assembly to move for the impeachment of President Buhari who can’t protect Nigerians from ‘favoured terrorists named bandits’.

HURIWA said it won’t be shocking if the terrorists were able to take over the newly purchased Tucano military jets because the current administration was unwilling to wage a law-based war on terror against the armed Fulani attackers.

5 Health Problems You’re Actually Not Too Young For

If you’re a woman in your 20s, you probably think you don’t have to worry about health problems such as strokes and colon cancer yet. But according to new research, they could affect you sooner than you think. Recent studies indicate that some disorders associated with older age are affecting younger adults, while others are greatly influenced by what you do in your 20s and 30s.

“With the epidemic of obesity and sedentary lifestyles, we’re seeing a rise in risk factors like high cholesterol, smoking and high blood pressure in younger adults,” says Erin Michos, M.D., M.H.S., associate director of preventive cardiology for the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease at The Johns Hopkins University. “But it’s important to know that these risk factors are largely preventable. If women make lifestyle changes now, they can greatly lower their risk for developing these health problems.”

Protect yourself from conditions increasingly affecting younger women. Here’s what you need to know.S

Strokes: While the majority of strokes occur in people over the age of 65, a recent study found a 32 percent spike in strokes among women ages 18 to 34. This sudden rise is concerning, Michos says. “Although it’s less common for younger women to have strokes, when they do it’s more likely to be fatal.”

What’s behind the increase? Risk factors for cardiovascular disease — high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and smoking — have doubled in millennial women. Your risk is also higher than a man your age if you’re pregnant or take birth control pills, both of which can slightly increase your chance of stroke. Autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, which are more common in women, are linked to a much greater risk for stroke, too.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (when your blood pumps too forcefully through your veins) is often called a silent killer. That’s because most people who have it don’t have symptoms, even though the disorder is damaging the heart, kidneys, blood vessels and brain.

Seven percent of women between ages 20 and 34 have high blood pressure. While the rate may seem low, the big issue is that young adults are far less likely to be diagnosed and treated for the condition. If left untreated, high blood pressure can result in heart disease later in life and is the leading cause of strokes. In fact, just keeping your blood pressure in check reduces your risk of stroke by 48 percent.

Pregnancy may give you a preview of your risk for high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. If you have preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy), you have a much greater chance of having high blood pressure and heart problems later on. Michos explains, “Pregnancy is like a stress test for your body. If you develop complications, it’s a sign that there may be health issues that will re-emerge afterward.”

Colon and rectal cancer

Another study recently sounded an alarm about millennials being increasingly affected by colon and rectal cancers. “The major risk factor for the vast majority of patients with colorectal cancer is just age,” says Nilo Azad, M.D., associate professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “But now we’re seeing a bit of an increase in a younger population, and we’re not entirely sure why.”

The point to remember is that colorectal cancer (cancer in the colon or rectum) can affect younger people. Talk to your doctor if you see blood in your stool or notice changes in your bowel habits. Because younger people are less likely to have colorectal cancer, there’s often a delay in being diagnosed. If your symptoms don’t improve with initial treatment for another condition such as hemorrhoids, ask your doctor when you should be tested for cancer.

Also, if one of your parents or a brother or sister had colorectal cancer before age 50, you should get tested earlier, advises Azad. Start getting screened 10 years before the age at which your family member was diagnosed.

Diabetes

You could have diabetes and not even know it. That’s the case for an estimated 3.1 million women in the United States, who likely don’t know they have the disease because they haven’t noticed any symptoms.

Obesity is a leading risk factor for diabetes. Younger generations — even children — have much higher rates of obesity than ever before. Because of that, it is on the rise, says Michos. “Type 2 diabetes and the obesity epidemic are driven by the ways many people live these days. We consume more calories, sweet beverages and fast food, and spend far too much time sitting.”

Hispanic, African-American and Native American women have to be especially careful when it comes to factors that contribute to type 2 diabetes. That’s because they are up to four times more likely to develop the condition. Developing type 2 diabetes also puts women more at risk for heart disease.

You can also experience a form of the disease called gestational diabetes during pregnancy. If you do, you’re 20 to 50 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes at a later point. This means it’s crucial to be screened for the disease more often after delivery.

Brain Shrinkage

Brain shrinkage sounds pretty scary, but it’s actually a normal part of aging. However, certain factors are linked to a faster decline in brain volume. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, are overweight or smoke, your brain could shrink more quickly than normal, which can affect your mental capacity, says Michos.

A study shows that making heart-healthy choices in your 20s may protect your brain from shrinking years down the road.  The study also found further evidence that taking care of your health can keep your mind intact. That research revealed that people with heart disease risk factors had more amyloid deposits in the brain, which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

“There’s no doubt that how you live the first half of your life not only impacts your current state, but it also affects how healthy you’ll be in the second half of your life,” Michos says.
