Nigeria Has Never Been This Bad, Atiku Blasts Buhari At PDP Convention

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Saturday, slammed the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for what he termed its poor management of the nation’s economy.

Atiku who stated this at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP national elective convention in Abuja,  scored the All Progressives Congress, APC government low on virtually all development indices said President Buhari simply failed to make the most of the opportunity Nigerians availed him of when he was first elected in 2015 and again in 2019.

He said: “Today, our country is going through the most trying and difficult period of its existence. I can tell you that I am 70 years plus but I have never seen this country in such a very bad shape, so disunited, so much unemployment, so much insecurity in its history.

“The social and security challenges in all corners along with the lingering tension surrounding the very nature of our corporate existence as a nation, Nigeria is at the edge of because of the lackluster performance and  complacency of successive administrations,  culminating in the gross failure of this APC-led government.

“As we ruminate the problems of our great country as a nation, let us consider this: we have a chance now to set the ship on the right course. We have the chance to atone for the mistake of past leadership and our collective past mistakes.

“We have the chance to unite the country on the part towards greatness to achieve and exceed the dreams of our founding fathers who fought for independence so many years ago. A chance to seize the opportunity to steer our country towards its rightful position among the comity of nations. “We can save ourselves and the party and we can save Nigeria together. We have our differences and we will face daunting challenges along the way but we can face and overcome anything if we can only join hands and work together on this noble course.

“The PDP is not perfect, and as humans, none of us is perfect. But we continue to work everyday to learn from and correct our mistakes. The APC has proven itself to be ill-equip to lead the nation. They have shown themselves to be corrupt, in fact, the most corrupt, sectional and divisive party that was never prepared to lead this country.

“The responsibility therefore is for us to arrest the downward spiral of the Nigerian nation and save the country from even greater calamities. This is our collective responsibility.

“We must set aside our differences. We must bring forth our brightest lights and position themselves to rescue, restore and rebuild the foundation so that  we can usher in prosperity, decency, security, economic growth, reduce unemployment and restore dignity of our country.

“I am  appealing to members of our great party and to all Nigerians to shun our past differences, to set aside political machinations and scheming and wrestle power from the APC.

“The APC has comprehensively failed Nigerians for the past six years. This time is a critical juncture for us politicians to work together to return Nigerians on the part of growth and development.  The unity of key players in the PDP is an extension of the unity of Nigerians.

“I believe we should return and focus the party on part of competence.  I believe we should gather our technocrats, our greatest minds to join us in charting the way forward for the party in the country.”

EXPOSED! President Buhari, Rotimi Amaechi Award Multi-Billion Naira Maritime Contract To A Medical Company

President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, have approved a huge national security-sensitive maritime contract to a medical company in a process the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) says is “embarrassing” and illegal, a PREMIUM TIMES investigation has revealed.

The development has unsettled the Buhari government, with senior officials sparring and trading accusations of bad faith and the BPP complaining of “procedural lapses” in carefully worded memos that only stopped short of directly accusing Mr Buhari and Mr Amaechi of lawlessness.

Our investigation is based on several confidential government memos and extensive interviews with insiders familiar with the matter.

The procurement agency said the contract was awarded in clear breach of the Public Procurement Act 2007.

The International Cargo Tracking Note (ICTN) scheme is an electronic cargo verification system that monitors the shipment of seaborne cargo and enables a real-time generation of vital data on ship and cargo traffic in and out of Nigeria, a government memo says, emphasising national security and economic benefits.

Ikeja Electric To Shutdown Power In Ikeja, Magodo, 6 Other Areas For 8 Weeks

  • Lagos State residents, particularly those settled in the Ikeja axis of the state, would be experiencing power shutdown for a period of eight weeks as part of repair work that would be embarked on by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

As gathered, the area that would be affected during the shutdown to enable the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, to re-conduct its 132KV lines include Oregun, Police Training College, Oba Akran, Oke Ira, Ogba, Magodo, Anifowoshe, and Omole Phase One.

Confirming the development, the Ikeja Electric Plc, Chief Technical Officer, Olajide Kumapayi, said that the project, which would begin on October 11, was aimed at increasing the capacity of the transmission lines to wheel more power from the generation companies.

Briefing journalists on Monday on the TCN motives, he noted that some of 132Klines installed over 50 years ago had become obsolete and degraded due to time and usage, hence the need for the upgrade.

According to him, the TCN is currently embarking on the upgrade of the 132KV lines from Ikeja West to Ota and Alimosho in stages. This is the second stage.

“The TCN is replacing all the aluminum conductors with gap conductors which is more sophisticated to withstand heat and has more capacity to carry current.

“The implication of this is that from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, the substations controlling these areas will be switched off, which will affect the feeders connected to them.

“This will affect all categories of customers within the area especially our Maximum Demand (MD) customers such as Ikeja City Mall, Police College, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the Ikeja High Court.”

He added that the TCN would also move to Alimosho and Agege axis during the next stage, noting that the upgrade was a power sector initiative to boost transmission and distribution of electricity to Nigerians.

On his part, the company’s Head, Corporate Communications, Felix Ofulue, said that the DisCo had written to the MD customers notifying them of the situation, adding that the company was also meeting with its bilateral power supply agreement partners and appealed to all those affected to exercise patience with the DisCo during the period.

“Even though this is a TCN project, it is our duty to inform our customers of the situation because we are the ones that interface with them on a daily basis.

“We believe it will be for the benefit of our customers at the end of the day and will also allow Ikeja Electric to invest more in our system to improve power supply to customers under our network,” Ofulue said.

Nigeria Reports 74 New COVID-19 Cases In Eight States, FCT

Nigeria on Sunday confirmed 74 new cases of COVID-19, one of the lowest single-day tallies to be recorded since the country slipped into a third wave of the pandemic.

Giving an update on the outbreak of the disease on Monday, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) explained that the new infections were reported in eight states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

They are Lagos – 36, Edo – 11, FCT – nine, Akwa Ibom – six, Sokoto – six, Delta – three, Benue – one, Oyo – one, and Rivers – one.

“Today (Sunday)’s report includes zero cases recorded from Bauchi, Ekiti, Gombe, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, and Plateau States,” the NCDC said.

It stated that no new death was recorded on Sunday.

Data from the agency revealed that as of Monday, Nigeria has confirmed a total of 206,138 cases from the 3,090,114 samples collected and tested so far.

Of the confirmed cases, 194,097 cases have been discharged with 9,256 active cases while the nation’s death toll from the pandemic still stands at 2,723.

This latest figure was reported at a time when members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) suspended their nationwide strike.

The industrial action has paralysed activities in government-owned hospitals across the country in the last two months.

Confirming the development to Channels Television on Monday, a NARD official revealed that 56 doctors voted in support of the suspension at a meeting held recently while 28 others were against it.

The resident doctors embarked on a nationwide strike on August 2 to protest several issues affecting members of the association.

These include the non-payment of death benefits to families of members who died while treating COVID-19 patients, as well as non-payment of hazard allowance and arrears of salaries of members in various states, among others.
