Biodun Stephen ..It's Natural For Children To Go Back To Their Absentee Parents

Filmmaker, Biodun Stephen, has said it is natural for children to go back to their absentee parents. The producer of the trending movie, ‘Sista’, also spoke about how her personal story influenced the movie.

She told Saturday Beats, “My mum was a single mum. She worked very hard to raise my sister and me. I was about 16 years old when I had an argument with my mum. At that time, I had just reconnected with my father’s family, and so I packed my things to live with them. My mother found it difficult to let it go. She was just crying and she said, ‘so I have where to go now because my father’s people have shown up.’ That was what I was trying to mirror when I wrote and produced ‘Sista’.

“My parents separated when I was about 18 months old. I met my dad when I was about seven years old. My parents tried to work things out for about a year but it didn’t work out. My father was in and out of my life but when I turned 12, I did not see him again until I heard four years later that he has passed away.”

Some of Stephen’s directorial works include ‘The Kujus Again’, ‘Breaded Life’, ‘Progressive Tailors Club’, ‘Aki and Pawpaw’, and ‘A Simple Lie

Speaking on if children are insensitive if they go back to their father or mother who abandoned them, Stephen said, “I think it is part of growing up for any child. At some point, children become self aware and discover who they are. I don’t think it is wrong to look for their other parent. It is a natural thing. I will advise single parents to tell their children about their past so that they can see how they will accept it. I don’t think single parents should paint bad pictures of their spouses because it is not always worth it. Regardless, that parent will still be loved.”

She also spoke on mothers who change the surname of their children because their partners are deadbeats. She said, “It is their prerogative to do whatever they like. I would speak for myself. I use my mother’s surname. I had a peculiar experience that made me say I want to honour my mother by bearing her name. That was my choice because she raised me. My sister is still using my father’s name.”

Speaking on how she felt about how ‘Sista’ has been trending, she said, “I know that the topic is a universal one. I feel humbled that a lot of us are connected by this singular thing. It is not just about the character, ‘Sista’, being a single mum but it has made some people look at their parents and be grateful for the sacrifice and all the effort. I am really humbled by the reception.”

In a chapter titled “Iyanya and My Love Life”, the actress spoke about her escapades with Iyanya and how she later found out he was cheating on her.

Nelson said she thought the singer’s gesture of tattooing her initials “YN” on his waist and giving her a shoutout on his hit song ‘Ur Waist’ was an assurance that they could be together forever.

She said she was shocked when someone called her from Iyanya’s house after she returned to Ghana and broke the shocking news to her.

“The caller said anytime I left Iyanya’s place, another actress come over to him and sometimes slept over. The person felt strongly that there was something going on between them and thought I should know. That actress turned out to be Tonto Dikeh of Nigeria and one of the female celebrities Iyanya named in his “Ur Waist” song. When I was convinced about the authenticity of the information I received, I was heartbroken,” the book partly reads.

She, however, said she knew she would have eventually left the relationship even if Tonto Dikeh hadn’t come into the picture, adding that she didn’t see any reason to keep fighting for a man she had lost

I Aborted For Sacodie...Yvonne Nelson

Award-winning Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson, confirmed she aborted a pregnancy for rapper, Sarkodie, in 2010 after a short relationship.

She made this known in her book “I am not Yvonne Nelson” which launched at Peduase Lodge, Ghana on Sunday,

Narrating the incident on pages 88-95 of chapter eight of her new book, Yvonne wrote, “I had gone for a pregnancy test to confirm what becomes the most obvious conclusion for a sexually active young woman who misses her monthly flow. I was in the company of Karen. And when the test result was ready, I wasn’t strong enough to open it. She did and declared the verdict.

Charlie, it dey there!’, she exclaimed.

“On an ordinary day, I would have laughed out loud and that would trigger a string of jolly conversations and jokes. But this was no laughing matter. It was a grim piece of information that was capable of turning my world upside down.

I wasn’t the only one responsible for the situation, so I called the man whose potent seed had germinated in me. His name is Michael Owusu Addo, a renowned Ghanaian musician who is better known as Sarkodie”

Sarkodie was a budding musician with the potential to become one of the biggest artists in Ghana and beyond. At the time, however, the future looked uncertain, and his way through the maze of life still appeared too foggy to predict. Success was not guaranteed. He was still living with his mother and was not ready to carry a burden while he was being carried by his mother.

Writing on their relationship, Nelson added, “I wouldn’t call what had developed between us a serious relationship. I gravitated toward people in the music industry. For the longest time in my life, music was my getaway from all the unpleasant things life threw at me. So, I liked his talent. We started talking and got close, closer.

In the book, the actress narrated how she attempted to abort the pregnancy by taking concoctions from a colleague but the substance could not work as a test carried out revealed sheb was still pregnant.

The first thing that hit me when he said no to keeping the pregnancy was my own life. I had grown up without a father in my life. I had often been reminded of how I had been borne by mistake.

I was still wondering if the man whose name I bore was my father. How was I going to bring another human being into this world to live like me, someone whose father would reject him or her as Mr. Nelson had rejected me? If there was a way to spare someone else the trauma I was contending with, why would I reject that option, especially when I was not,” Yvonne Nelson said in her book.

She further recalled finally succeeding in aborting the pregnancy but said it is one of the most regrettable mistakes in her life. She added that if the clock of life could be rewound to her younger self, she would have kept it.
