Ikeja Electric To Shutdown Power In Ikeja, Magodo, 6 Other Areas For 8 Weeks

  • Lagos State residents, particularly those settled in the Ikeja axis of the state, would be experiencing power shutdown for a period of eight weeks as part of repair work that would be embarked on by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

As gathered, the area that would be affected during the shutdown to enable the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, to re-conduct its 132KV lines include Oregun, Police Training College, Oba Akran, Oke Ira, Ogba, Magodo, Anifowoshe, and Omole Phase One.

Confirming the development, the Ikeja Electric Plc, Chief Technical Officer, Olajide Kumapayi, said that the project, which would begin on October 11, was aimed at increasing the capacity of the transmission lines to wheel more power from the generation companies.

Briefing journalists on Monday on the TCN motives, he noted that some of 132Klines installed over 50 years ago had become obsolete and degraded due to time and usage, hence the need for the upgrade.

According to him, the TCN is currently embarking on the upgrade of the 132KV lines from Ikeja West to Ota and Alimosho in stages. This is the second stage.

“The TCN is replacing all the aluminum conductors with gap conductors which is more sophisticated to withstand heat and has more capacity to carry current.

“The implication of this is that from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, the substations controlling these areas will be switched off, which will affect the feeders connected to them.

“This will affect all categories of customers within the area especially our Maximum Demand (MD) customers such as Ikeja City Mall, Police College, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the Ikeja High Court.”

He added that the TCN would also move to Alimosho and Agege axis during the next stage, noting that the upgrade was a power sector initiative to boost transmission and distribution of electricity to Nigerians.

On his part, the company’s Head, Corporate Communications, Felix Ofulue, said that the DisCo had written to the MD customers notifying them of the situation, adding that the company was also meeting with its bilateral power supply agreement partners and appealed to all those affected to exercise patience with the DisCo during the period.

“Even though this is a TCN project, it is our duty to inform our customers of the situation because we are the ones that interface with them on a daily basis.

“We believe it will be for the benefit of our customers at the end of the day and will also allow Ikeja Electric to invest more in our system to improve power supply to customers under our network,” Ofulue said.

Nigeria Reports 74 New COVID-19 Cases In Eight States, FCT

Nigeria on Sunday confirmed 74 new cases of COVID-19, one of the lowest single-day tallies to be recorded since the country slipped into a third wave of the pandemic.

Giving an update on the outbreak of the disease on Monday, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) explained that the new infections were reported in eight states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

They are Lagos – 36, Edo – 11, FCT – nine, Akwa Ibom – six, Sokoto – six, Delta – three, Benue – one, Oyo – one, and Rivers – one.

“Today (Sunday)’s report includes zero cases recorded from Bauchi, Ekiti, Gombe, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, and Plateau States,” the NCDC said.

It stated that no new death was recorded on Sunday.

Data from the agency revealed that as of Monday, Nigeria has confirmed a total of 206,138 cases from the 3,090,114 samples collected and tested so far.

Of the confirmed cases, 194,097 cases have been discharged with 9,256 active cases while the nation’s death toll from the pandemic still stands at 2,723.

This latest figure was reported at a time when members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) suspended their nationwide strike.

The industrial action has paralysed activities in government-owned hospitals across the country in the last two months.

Confirming the development to Channels Television on Monday, a NARD official revealed that 56 doctors voted in support of the suspension at a meeting held recently while 28 others were against it.

The resident doctors embarked on a nationwide strike on August 2 to protest several issues affecting members of the association.

These include the non-payment of death benefits to families of members who died while treating COVID-19 patients, as well as non-payment of hazard allowance and arrears of salaries of members in various states, among others.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Hit By Massive Outage

Major social media services including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were hit by a massive outage on Monday, tracking sites showed, impacting potentially tens of millions of users.

Outage tracker Downdetector was showing outages in heavily populated areas like Washington and Paris, with problems being reported from around 1545 GMT.

Users trying to access Facebook in affected areas were greeted with the message: “Something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.”

“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products,” Facebook spokesman Andy Stone said on Twitter.

The outage comes a day after a whistleblower went on US television to reveal her identity after she leaked a trove of documents to authorities alleging the social media giant knew its products were fueling hate and harming children’s mental health.

Frances Haugen, a 37-year-old data scientist from Iowa, has worked for companies including Google and Pinterest — but said in an interview with CBS news show “60 Minutes” that Facebook was “substantially worse” than anything she had seen before.

The world’s largest social media platform has been embroiled in a firestorm brought about by Haugen, with US lawmakers and The Wall Street Journal detailing how Facebook knew its products, including Instagram, were harming young girls, especially around body image.

Facebook did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the outage.

I Can’t Imagine Life Without You, Obama Toasts Michelle At 29th Wedding Anniversary

Ex-President Barack Obama has restated his commitment to his marriage and, by implication, his wife of 29 years, Michelle.

As the couple marked their 29th wedding anniversary on Sunday, the former POTUS had tweeted at the mother of his two kids:

“Happy anniversary, Miche! Over the past 29 years, I’ve loved watching the world get to know you not just as a daughter of the South Side, but as a mother, lawyer, executive, author, First Lady, and my best friend. I can’t imagine life without you.”

The former First Couple had revealed that they nearly got divorced after the birth of their first child, Malia.

During a tour of her book, Becoming, which was launched with a countrywide videoed tour, Michelle had told one of her interviewers, Gayle King, that she and Barack were able to weather their marital storm after they had consulted with a marriage counsellor.

Ms King expressed regrets that she didn’t have the privilege to save her own marriage as Michelle did.

Also, in Barack’s new memoir, A Promised Land, the former POTUS had opened up about his and Michelle’s marriage issues after their eldest daughter, Malia, was born in 1998.

In the book, which launched on Wednesday, November 17, 2020, Barack explained that he was able to focus on being a father while he was at home with Malia that summer after she was born, but once his paternity leave ended and he had to return to work at three jobs (not to mention plan his run for Congress in 2000), he could not spend as much time with his family.

“Michelle bore the brunt of all this, shuttling between mothering and work, unconvinced that she was doing either job well,” Barack wrote. “At the end of each night, after feeding and bath time and story time and cleaning up the apartment and trying to keep track of whether she’d picked up the dry cleaning and making a note to herself to schedule an appointment with the pediatrician, she would often fall into an empty bed, knowing the whole cycle would start all over again in a few short hours while her husband was off doing ‘important things,’” Obama stated in the book.

The former president has continued to enthuse about his wife’s sexiness and support over the years.
