US Immigration Policy Shifts: Trump Orders ICE to Target Unaccompanied Minors

As of February 24, 2025, the Trump administration has stepped up its efforts to enforce immigration laws, particularly targeting unaccompanied migrant children living in the U.S. A new order has been issued directing immigration agents to find and deport these minors who arrived in the country without their parents.

An internal memo details a plan to gradually implement this directive starting January 27, 2025. Since 2019, more than 600,000 children have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border alone, and many face deportation due to missing court appearances. This initiative is intended to uphold immigration laws and protect children from potential trafficking, putting them into categories based on factors like whether they may run away.

Furthermore, the administration has halted a program that offered legal assistance to these children, which affects about 26,000 kids who received direct help and an additional 100,000 who got legal advice. Groups like Kids In Need of Defense have criticized this decision, highlighting the difficulties children will face deportation without legal representation.

Human rights advocates warn that these actions are harmful and lack compassion towards vulnerable children.
